Committee Assignments

Representative Micah Caskey currently serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Ethics Committee. More information about the jurisdiction of the committees is provided below:

Judiciary

The South Carolina House Judiciary Committee is made up of 25 members and is chaired by Rep. Chris Murphy (Dist. 98). The House Judiciary Committee handles around 40% of all legislation that is filed in the General Assembly. The Committee handles any legislation that pertains to and may affect the legal landscape of the state of South Carolina.

It is made up of 5 subcommittees, each one specializing in a specific area of the law. The subcommittees that make up the Judiciary Committee are listed as the following: Constitutional Laws, Criminal Laws, Election Laws, General and Family Laws, and Special Laws.

Rep. Caskey serves as the Chairman of the General Laws Subcommittee.

Ethics

The South Carolina House Ethics Committee is made up of 10 members and is chaired by Rep. Jay Jordan (Dist. 63). Unlike other committees, the House Ethics Committee is elected by the members of the House of Representatives. The Committee handles any matters that pertain to Chapter 13, Title 8 of the South Carolina Code of Laws, which governs the ethical behavior of public officers and employees.

The primary tasks of the House Ethics Committee include conducting investigations into officials who have been accused of misconduct. From these investigations, the committee will determine whether the charges were warranted and make recommendations as to what further actions need to be taken.

Advisory opinions drafted by the Ethics Committee are made public and are available to read on the South Carolina State House website.
